Dear Hillside Families
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so I want to share this short video we created on Wellbeing & Early Years. Children at this age are developing rapidly and may experience various emotions and feelings as they navigate new experiences and challenges (thinking about transition up ahead.)
It is important to help your child develop resilience and emotional intelligence by teaching them self-regulation skills, such as deep breathing exercises and positive self-talk (The Power of Yet). By prioritising children's mental health and wellbeing, we can help them build a strong foundation for future success and happiness.
Social-emotional development and building friendships are important aspects of overall wellbeing. These concepts can be both exciting and challenging for our little ones. Please read more under the section on Friendships & Play Skills. We hope you find it useful.
On a similar topic, we've noticed that some of our children are playing or talking about playing video games like Minecraft and Among Us. However, these games are recommended for older children (10+ years for Minecraft and 8+ years for Among Us) and are unsuitable for our kindergarten children. We understand that it can be difficult for parents if the children's older siblings are playing these particular games at home, but it's equally important to provide some age-appropriate options instead.
For further guidance, we recommend Common Sense Media, an online resource for entertainment and technology recommendations for families. We also planned a parent webinar led by ESF Educational Technologies Lead, Jason Prohaska. In this informative session, you will gain valuable insights into fostering healthy digital habits in your child. Please find further details below.
Warm regards
Audrey
Nurturing Healthy Digital Habits for Young Children
Monday, May 13, 2024 1-2pm
We invite parents and caregivers to attend this upcoming webinar led by ESF Educational Technologies Lead, Jason Prohaska. In this informative session, you will gain valuable insights into fostering healthy digital habits in your child. Topics covered include:
We encourage all parents to join us for this webinar to equip yourselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to support your child in developing responsible and mindful digital habits.
Just like any other skill, understanding friendship is a developmental process. It takes time for children to grasp the complexities of building and maintaining relationships. As parents, it's important to recognise that acquiring friendship skills is a gradual journey. Here, we draw parallels between friendship and another essential aspect of childhood: play skills.
Understanding the parallels between play skills and friendship can help us appreciate the developmental nature of friendship. Just as children progress from solitary play to cooperative play, they also evolve in their ability to form meaningful friendships.
We can support our children's friendship development by providing opportunities for social interaction (play-dates) and encouraging open communication (modelling language). Here's a simple video that illustrates some of the social skills children learn through play.
We hope you find these insights helpful in understanding the developmental journey of friendship and continue to create a supportive environment that encourages your child's social growth.
Recently the ESF Educational Psychology Service delivered a webinar for parents on the topic of Sleep. (Lights Out, Sweet Dreams: A Practical Webinar on Sleep for Parents and Caregivers).
As a follow-up to the webinar, we have created the following document that may be useful:
