Dear Hillside Families
As we dive into Term 2, we are all too familiar with the challenges of unpredictable weather and the busy times that come along with them. With rain showers and yo-yo temperatures, it's important to remain vigilant against illnesses. We will continue to monitor the weather conditions and adjust our activities as needed. Please continue to reinforce good hygiene practices with the children, such as hand washing and mask handling. By instilling these habits, we aim to minimise the risk of any potential outbreaks. Please also refer to the information on Seasonal Flu Vaccinations below.
Despite the weather, our calendar is packed with upcoming events and activities for you and your children. From incursions and excursions to lion dance performances to parent-teacher conferences and volunteering activities, there are many opportunities to come together as a community and celebrate the progress and achievements of our children.
Wishing you all a healthy and prosperous Year of the Snake!
Warm regards
Audrey
We are excited to announce the launch of our "Community Play" soon after Lunar New Year, where K1 and K2 children will share outdoor play during our usual Open Play time. We have intentionally waited to introduced this now, after allowing the children to settle into their own year levels first. This approach ensures that they can connect and build relationships with their peers in a natural and engaging way.
Playing in mixed age groups offers numerous benefits for our children. It encourages the development of social skills, as older children take on leadership roles and younger children learn from their peers. This interaction fosters a sense of community, enhances problem-solving abilities, and allows for shared learning experiences that enrich their playtime.
During Community Play, children can continue to explore a variety of learning engagements designed to foster creativity and curiosity. These activities are linked to our current unit of inquiry and help develop essential approaches to learning. Our dedicated teachers and educational assistants will guide and support the children, encouraging them to explore different activities and integrate their learning experiences.
We warmly welcome parent volunteers to join us during this part of the programme, as your involvement enriches the experience for our children.
The following events in Term 2 are now available for sign-up:
Please look out for a separate app message with further information specific to your class and to sign up. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 2540-0066.
The K1 children will be visiting the Pamela Peck Discovery Space on an educational excursion.
10 Mar (Monday) - Dolphin & Frog class
13 Mar (Thursday) - Monkey & Panda class
The trip is designed to support the learning goals of multiple Units of Inquiry this year, broadening their opportunities for various play and interactions with new materials and spaces. The excursion will also support their upcoming unit on 'How the World Works' as there are many different play areas at Pamela Peck to encourage children to experiment and explore.
We kindly request that one parent or caregiver accompany each child. Your presence will offer unique perspectives that align with your child's interests, making learning more meaningful and engaging. By helping to connect their learning to their personal experiences, you can support your child in deepening their understanding.
We will share more details about the trip, including logistics and consent forms, after the Lunar New Year break. We look forward to this exciting learning opportunity!
K2 children will be making a start to their new Unit of Inquiry, "Sharing the Planet," focusing on respect and responsibility for their local environment. To enhance their research skills and connect with nature, we have organised a nature walk at Bowen Road. The schedule for this is:
10 Feb Mon - Tiger class
11 Feb Tues - Gecko class
12 Feb Wed - Dragon class
13 Feb Thurs - Turtle class
Further details about the Bowen Road excursion and consent form will be sent through a separate app message.
"Recent statistics from the past flu season in Hong Kong revealed 32 paediatric cases of influenza-associated severe complications, with six fatalities reported. Nearly half of these cases developed severe chest infections. Notably, the majority (74%) of these cases had not received the Seasonal Influenza Vaccine (SIV) in the previous season." (ref - [Web Link])
The government will provide a subsidy for vaccination doses. Over half of the enrolled Vaccination Subsidy Scheme (VSS) doctors will not impose additional charges beyond the Government's subsidy. For an overview of eligibility and vaccination venues, please visit: [Web Link]
Please note Hillside will not be participating in the school outreach programme for vaccinations due to the age of our children. Many of our little ones are still building positive relationships and may feel anxious about medical procedures. We believe it is in their best interest to avoid any added stress associated with receiving injections at school. We encourage parents to consider arranging vaccinations through their family doctors to ensure a comfortable experience for their children.
