Dear Hillside Families
As we wrap up the last week before the Easter break, I want to thank each of you for your ongoing support and engagement in our Hillside community. It’s been a fantastic term filled with learning and growth, and we’re excited to finish it on a fun note with a dress-up day. Please see the details below!
Warm regards
Audrey
Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, 2 April, our final day of term! To celebrate, we’re having a dress-casual day with a fun twist: Pyjama Day! Children are welcome to wear their cosiest pyjamas to school. Please ensure that their choices allow them to manage their toileting routines independently and remember that for safety, children must wear regular running shoes to fully participate in outdoor activities during Community Play. We’re looking forward to a relaxed and enjoyable last day of term with everyone!
We’ve received some feedback in the recent stakeholder survey regarding the busy traffic on Stubbs Road. Every year, the principals from both Hillside and Bradbury meet our School Police Liaison to discuss current matters. One meeting included representatives from the Department of Transportation to share our concerns regarding the Stubbs Road traffic. We have requested school zone signage and pedestrian railings (now installed), and the department is currently reviewing the bus stop and pedestrian crossing locations.
If you drive your children to school, please avoid double-parking, blocking traffic, or parking in front of the school exit gates. Adhering to parking etiquette is essential in maintaining a safe environment for all, especially in a school zone. Your cooperation in keeping our children safe is greatly appreciated, and we thank you for your attention to this matter.
Thank you to parents and caregivers who joined us for the webinar last week to learn more about how children develop skills across time to form friendships and why playdates are a critical part of this development. We value your thoughts and feedback and would greatly appreciate you giving us some time to fill out this survey. Your input will help us to plan future parent sessions.
An earlier webinar in Term 1 also explored in depth how parents and caregivers can facilitate playdates to explicitly develop children’s social skills such as turn-taking, and how to support children’s challenging emotions that may arise during play. For ease, here are the materials from that session:
Our upcoming social media post will continue to focus on Play skills & Friendships. We’ll be highlighting essential skills that lay the groundwork for successful social interactions. Understanding these skills will empower you to support your child's social development and prepare them for future friendships. We encourage you to engage with this content! [IG: @esf.hillside]
In celebration of Book Week, we encourage children to express themselves through stories by dressing up as a book character of their choice on Friday, 25 April. We invite them to bring the corresponding book to share with their friends. Inspiration can come from any fiction or non-fiction book. Let your creativity shine! However, we kindly request that children refrain from wearing costumes based on Disney or Marvel characters, as we want to focus on promoting literacy and a love of books. We’ve included some pictures from last year for inspiration!
We’re all very excited for this fun event and we especially appreciate parent support in helping your children prepare for the special dress-up day.
Following on from the vision screening and recognising the importance of early intervention, we have scheduled a Hearing Screening at Hillside with ENTlaser Hearing and Speech Therapy Centre.
TEST - Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
What it is: OAEs are sounds given off by the inner ear in response to an auditory stimuli. These sounds are produced by the hair cells and can be measured automatically by a handheld portable device. The measured frequencies are 2k, 3k, 4k and 5k Hz. These frequencies are tested as they are most susceptible to hearing loss and crucial for speech and language development.
Duration: approximately 3-4 minutes per child
Results: If a child passes, results indicate that he/she has normal hearing (or mild hearing loss at most) and do not have any middle ear issues. If a child fails, results indicate that he/she needs to have a full diagnostic test at clinic to determine whether there is a presence of middle ear issues (which can be corrected with medication) or sensorineural hearing loss and determine whether there is a need for aural rehabilitation.
The screening is optional, and registration is via this Eventbrite link
If you want to sign your child up for this optional screening, please register by 22 April.
