Dear Parents
We hope you all had an enjoyable Dragon Boat Festival weekend! With a few more weeks left in school, it never fails to amaze and fulfil when we take a step back to admire how much the children have developed (both academically and socially) in addition to how much they have physically grown since we commenced school last August, especially in an unprecedented year like this year.
With our Celebration of Learning days coming up at the end of the month, the K2 children have been working hard to prepare for this important event that will highlight a special milestone in their young lives. As part of the unit “How We Express Ourselves,” the K2 children are planning a music and/ or movement piece to share with everyone. We will be capturing these special moments and preparing a video montage as a keepsake for parents before the end of term.
Kind regards
Audrey and the Hillside Team
As a finale to their current Unit of Inquiry on “How We Express Ourselves,” and also an end of term celebration, both the K1 and K2 children are invited to come in any outfit that expresses themselves on 28 & 29 June. The K2 celebration will be planned by the children, for the children, to celebrate their learning. It’ll be double the fun and value for our Hillside children as we send them off with joyful memories of their Hillside friends and teachers.
Your child’s end-of-year report will be available for viewing by the last Friday of term. We will send another reminder once it’s live online. Again, due to the unusual aspect of this academic year, it is important to note that learning is not locked in one point, one year or a particular age, but is an ongoing continuum, based on the child’s readiness rather than a date. All teachers between different year levels are very sensitive to the situation and will be meeting the children where they are, both academically and socio-emotionally, supporting the children in their next phase of learning.
We would like parents to refer to the Hillside VLE regularly. You can do this via the ESF App to access your child’s portfolio pieces, where you should find highlights of your child's work, and showcase your child’s role in their learning. This could also reflect your child's conceptual understandings, knowledge or skills, as well as ideas for continuing the learning or next steps. You may also access the e-portfolio from a desktop to download all your children’s work. Click HERE for instructions.
The portfolio pieces are supplemented by a written mid-year and end-of-year summary report on your child as a learner, framed through the lens of the PYP learner profile and Approaches to Learning (skills). This may include examples of a child's learning in the classroom or from live Zoom sessions, as well as suggestions on next steps to further the child’s learning. We also invite those parents interested to contribute to the report by adding your comment in the “parent response to learning” box.
Thank you again for your ongoing support and for working in partnership with us.
K1s: Interest Week continued to be a fun and engaging experience for all K1s. The princess castle, dinosaur land, and the outdoor emergency services play was extremely popular! Children exercised a lot of agency by making independent choices throughout the week to revisit learning areas they liked playing at...
K2s: The K2 children are in the thick of the Unit of Inquiry with the central idea being " People can express ideas and experiences in different ways ". At this stage of the school year, children are now much more aware of their own capabilities and preferences as a learner, and hence exercise agency in determining how they communicate their ideas to others, and how they like to express themselves...
